What is the Aqualoop?

Aqualoop is an innovative system that recycles the vast volumes of water consumed by AI data centers. Modern hyperscale facilities rely on evaporative cooling, which evaporates water to remove heat from GPUs and TPUs. After cooling the hardware, this now warm, humid air is expelled through exhaust vents, taking millions of gallons of water with it every day. Aqualoop solves this waste by capturing and recycling the evaporated water. Using advanced, largely untapped membrane-based dehumidification, our system extracts water molecules directly from the exhaust airstream and returns them to the cooling loop. This dramatically reduces net water consumption, lowers operating costs, and helps data centers meet rising sustainability requirements as public awareness of AI water usage increases.

How Does it Work?

Membranes, which are thin and porous materials that allow certain molecules to pass through their pores while blocking others, are the heart of Aqualoop technology. We use a hydrophobic PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) membrane with a pore size of 0.1-0.2 μm and a thickness of 10–300μm. In order for vapor to reenter liquid form, you need to remove the same amount of heat that it absorbed. Usually this is extremely energy intensive, but we use an energy efficient way to do this called sweep gas. A stream of cold, dry gas(around 15 c, 59 degrees fahrenheit) flows on the permeate side of the membrane(the side that gas permeates to) in counter current(perpendicular) to the feed gas. Heat naturally moves from areas of high heat to low heat, so the heat energy transfers across the membrane to the cold sweep gas, cooling the feed gas(with the water vapor in it) in the process.
